How to Overcome Nerves in Public Speaking

Monday, 16 June 2025 14:30

Feeling nervous before speaking in public is normal – even seasoned presenters experience it. The key isn’t to eliminate nerves, but to manage them so they don’t take over. At Presenter Studio, we coach clients to reframe nerves as energy – and to use that energy in a positive way.

One simple and effective tip is to breathe deeply before speaking. Shallow breathing triggers anxiety, while deep, controlled breaths tell your body you’re safe. We teach breathing techniques that help settle nerves and focus your voice.

Another technique is preparation – but not just memorising words. Prepare your structure. Know your key messages and the points you want to make. This gives you a mental map to follow, even if you feel thrown.

Rehearsing out loud is also critical. Reading through notes isn’t enough. Practise your opening out loud several times so it becomes familiar. That first minute is often the hardest, so the more rehearsed it is, the more confident you’ll feel.

We also help clients identify their ‘anchor’ – something physical like where you place your hands or how you stand. This can ground you and create a sense of control.

With the right techniques and some coaching, it’s possible not just to survive public speaking, but to enjoy it.
